what's wrong w/ my lawn??

DIY,

Thanks for the reply. I agree. I will need to prune the tree when I plant new grass.

How far down do the limbs come? How tall is the tree?

JoeTab24, I'm afraid that CCarlisle has it right. The cute little guy has a lot of toys (someone loves him, he's happy, and he plays outside) You might get some grass to grow, but until he is too old to want to stay near his parents', you'll not have a "lawn". Compaction.

what's wrong w/ my lawn??

Having eliminated most of the weeds, and therefore any green on my lawn, what would be some action steps I can take over the next few months?

THe tree is big and I will definitely have to prune it to get some more light. I will post some pics. I haven't done much pruning since living here.

Aerate, test for soil pH and adjust, fertilize, plant a 'shade' variety of grass seed, water appropriately, cordon off area for 3-4 weeks.

"Aerate"

Ok, I purchased a manual core aerator. After inserting it into the soil, I am noticing that when I pull the aerator out the ground large sections of soil are coming up in addition to the plugs that are supposed to come out. Is this ok? What does this mean?

Thanks!

Joe, I just saw this thread after I replied to your aerator thread.

I'm not a pro either, but here's what I would do... rent a small tiller and break up that soil, throw down a layer of topsoil and some shade grass seed.. put some cover on it, like straw and water it.. a lot. Oh.. and put up a big "keep off" sign.

Yup, I would definately get rid of the weeds with some round up. Once they have died, I would remove all of the dead grass and weeds with a smaller tiller or york rake if you can. Then I would hydroseed, water, and fertilize every 4-6 weeks. I would do this in the fall though--it is the best time to grow grass. This is how I went about preparing my lawn and it has turned out great. I just wish I had someone inground sprinkler because it would make my lawn much much better. Good luck!!

I don’t know that I would call that a lawn! I think you are wasting time and money treating it as such. The others are right; as long as there is heavy traffic you’re going to have problems. My suggestion is to kill everything and sod your yard. SOD provides you with a reestablished lawn that may help block out the weeds. It looks like you have a relatively small yard and it shouldn’t cost more than a few hundred bucks. Add soil improvements before you lay down the SOD. Also, you want to be selective as to where you lay down your lawn. For example, in my yard I have grass, and the play areas are dirt, separated by curbing. Good luck.

I'm just curious about how it's going under the ol' shade tree.
What did you decide to do--sod, seed, plant an invasive wild violet that's impossible to kill?
