Whats wrong with my spruce tree!

We have a very large spruce tree next to our driveway and I think something is wrong with it. The tree seems very bare and if you look closely many of the branches appear dead, there is no needles on them! Do any of you know what is wrong with the tree and if it can be fixed. I don't know exactly what type of spruce it is.

Consider visiting with you county extension service agent and ask if the Spruce Borer is prevalent in your area. On a slow day when the weather is nice sometimes they will visit a location such as yours just to get away from the office. If borers are common in the area the extension will know what treatment to recommend.
