What would you do here?

This is an area between our patio & AC unit. We don't have gutters (yet) so rain pours off the roof in a deluge and creates a nasty dirty pit. We just recently planted the split-leaf philodendron and those usually get pretty big here in the Florida climate. I just want the area to look decent without spending a lot of money on it. Ideas anyone?

I've never heard of a house without gutters. Is that common down there?

You can buy enough gutter, downspout and spikes at any home improvement center to take care of that area for about 50 bucks and a couple hours work.

But won't the water from the downspout kill the grass where ever it comes out?
