What should I do with this large area of my yard that won't grow grass??

I have been in my home for a few years now and for the first couple of years I tried to grow grass in this large area that is shaded by 2 large trees, then last year I just decided to mulch it. That turned out to be a bad idea because I raked up half the mulch when raking my leaves.. Now I am looking for ideas as to what I can do with this area.. I have considered river rocks, thinking it would be a little easier to get the leaves out of, I have also thought of patio pavers, but thought this would be pricey given that this are is almost 800sf.

I would greatly appreciate any advice? Is it possible to grow grass if done right? I did just find out I had a sprinkler system, (my neighbor told me), if that might help my chances with grass..

Hi. New to the forum. You should check out stepables.com. They have lots of information about ground covers and as the name suggests, many of them you can walk on.

Using a leaf blower instead of a rake works for me.
Did you install some form of border to keep the mulch in place?

Hostas would be my choice. Easy, cheap and a maintenance free plant if there ever were one.

Does any shade-tolerant grass grow in your area? Otherwise, you may consider shade-tolerant groundcovers and ornamental grasses. Or, you could cut one or both trees. If one or both are not healthy, you may want to cut them before they fall on anything.
