what is this? plant or weed?

looks like grass but grows thicker. i do not remember if it flowers but it is in the "flower beds" when we bought the house. If it is a weed, can it just be pulled up?

If you do not like it, you are not harvesting it to feed your livestock, and it is growing where you do not want it? I does not matter what it is officially. It is a weed to you!? If it is in your flower beds and you do not want it there? Get rid of it.

Or, if it's not encroaching on anything, and you have the patience, leave it for now. You can always dig or pull it out later. We have been in our house close to 30 years and still get a pleasant surprise every once in a while when something new, whether blown by the wind, dropped by a bird, maybe inadvertantly transplanted with something else, or who knows how, shows up in one of the flower beds. Pretty much as sdester said, some people's weeds are someone else's flowers.
