There is probably a shroom society chapter near you. I would see if they offer publications. I went on a hunt with some of the members of one from Indiana once and learned a lot.

There are many guides to edible, toxic and hallucinegentic (sp?) mushrooms online and at the library. Some are safe to eat cooked but not raw.

A library, by the way, is a big building with books (bound pieces of paper with pictures on them sometimes) and there is usually at least one in every community. I have reason to believe, LOL, a generation or two has never been in one. Most also have research librarians that will dig for what you ask at no charge.

Your State DNR offices may have guides. County or University ag extension offices may also have publications. For all I know, the US Printing Office and Bookstore or the Forestry department directly may have some free or cheap.

It is commonly called a puff ball and when it is smaller and greenish it is good fried like you would a morel mushroom Leave them alone as they look past their prime. They should turn a dark brown and when you kick them will put out a cloud of spores. I would Not Eat these now.

Puffballs are good, you can't mistake them for anything else easily. But if you cut one open and it doesn't look like one homogenous mass (i.e. if you find mushroom parts inside), do not eat it because it's a Destroying Angel and you will die of simultaneous liver and kidney failure.

This is a dead simple test. Cut it in half. Looks like a mushroom inside? Don't eat it.

Puffball:

Not a puffball, you will die:

I ended up just throwing them out. The boss said she didn't want them in the house. Oh well.
