What kind of basic lawnmower/weedwhacker should I get?

Dead grass is dead grass. Being dead doesn't make it thatch.

Overwatering causes thatch.
No watering (drought) causes thatch.
DAMB!
I'm taking my receipt back to UGA!

Thatch is the dead mat underneath the grass. Thatch, technically is dead grass, but dead grass is not always thatch.

You can call it whatever you want, but once dead, you'll have to rake it up before putting down seed and encouraging growth, meaning dethatching.
