What grass should I plant (to survive a 100+ lb labrador retriever)

I have been fighting a losing battle with my backyard for the past 3 summers. I continue to spend money and time trying to grow grass, but I always end up right back where I started. I have a 100+ lb lab who tends to walk the same paths and completely wear out any grass that I plant, especially under trees and along the fenceline.

Last year I put up temporary fencing to give my new grass a good start, but this spring there isn't much left. The whole back corner of my yard under a large mullberry tree is back to being almost completely bare, which is a nightmare when it rains.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what, if anything, I can plant to withstand the wear and tear of a large dog? Are there certain types of grass mix that would be more durable or is there anything else I should try? I know the answer is probably that I can't expect to have a perfect lawn with a dog, but I just want to get something planted so that it doesn't turn into a mud pit every time it rains. I would definitely appreciate any advice. Thanks!

I guess that would be an important piece of information! I live in northeastern Illinois.

Cubby,
I used to have the perfect lawn, not a blade of grass out of place. Rich, green lush, beautiful. Then I got a lab puppy. I stopped fertilizing because it seemed like she would always chew on the grass right after I fertilized or sprayed for weeds and get sick. She never wore paths, but left plenty of burn spots. She's 12 1/2 now, and slowing down, but still doing pretty good. You might not have the best lawn, but you have the world's best dog, by far, bar none. Here you are, some pics, Sadie the wonderdog.

Great looking dog for that age!

Was wondering if the poster could give up on grass in place and build some sort of dog run.

Under trees and along fences sounds like a good place for mulch/stone.

As for burn spots.. I have a friend who puts down lime where his dogs tend to pee. He says it's the base to counteract the acidic urine, which makes perfect sense chemically. But I've gotta think that having lime in your yard in any high quantity could be bad for the dog? And the runoff probably isn't that great, either?
