what do I need to do 1st to green up/fix my lawn

This lawn was here in 1986 when I bought my house. I am under the impression it is Bermuda. I have used Scott products but nothing seems to help. The brown portions can easily be pulled out of the soil by hand.Trying to find out if its too late to repair this grass. Or any other suggestions.

Get a soil sample and have it tested.

Also, find out what kind or lawn covering is there now. Take a sample to someone that sells grass and fertilizer to see what you are dealing with.

That will tell you whether to rip it out or nurture it. There is a wide range of grasses suitable, even for Orange county because of the variable exposure (coastal to higher altitudes or almost desert). Black Canyon will have different needs than the beach.

Look for a neighbor that has a good lawn and compare the "grass"/lawn covering and find out what they do as far as watering (amount and timing/rate) and fertilizing. - He may give you hints. Normally most housing areas were built at he same time by the same contractor, so an successful resident can help.

Looks like you need to water and have grubs or cinch bugs.

After you determine the type of grass, apply fertilizer with high nitrogen (first of three numbers) for the type of grass it is. If it's mixed with lots of weeds, then apply a weed and feed once, then continue with fertilizer only. I've been happy with vigoro products, which are cheaper than scott's. I also wonder if the grass is cut too short.

For starters I will have the soil tested and see what a specialist in my area says. Thanks everyone! I will post some photos if I can bring it back to life.

your cutting to short the sun is cooking the roots and the lawn is shutting down in the brown areas try middle 12 o'clock wheel adjustment on that mower..mulch it don't bag it if you have neighbor with a mint lawn....grab his/hers clippings asap GREEN STILL and mulch them into yours....all the treatments can't beat mulching and watering on a consistant bases save your money
