Question

What animal is doing this to my new trees? (pic included)

Hello, I planted around 20 evergreen trees. The trees toward the back of my property are near a small wooded area. These trees are being uprooted and dug out by something. The trees/roots aren't touched-- nothing is eating them. Whatever it is, it's simply digging up the fresh soil and leaving. This is occurring almost every day, and it's the same TWO trees toward the back of the yard.

I already tried packing in the dirt tighter, and I tried "Liquid Fence." Neither works. I live in PA toward the eastern part, so I'm guessing maybe Raccoons or Possum?

Here's a pic of the damage: http://i.imgur.com/rCbdA.jpg

Could be a skunk looking for easy grubs. Half of his work is already done.

Chris, how much hair or how big a cat, dog or human and should they be in pieces or otherwise run through a shredder first?

Maybe, just maybe, you meant get some hair from...

Seriously. When God made animals he made some really dumb. Squirrels and those close on the DNA chain are diligent but stupid. If they smell fresh dug dirt in Spring, the site must be where they hid their nuts some time ago. With no memory capacity they just dig and dig in spring.

I vote fox.

We had one in our backyard that use to make similar holes... in my amateur opinion, that's a way too big for a woodchuck, no?
