I don't know the answer but I'm treating my weeds now in the hopes that they'll be weaker next spring.

I am overun by weeds now. I put scotts turf builder on this last week [sept 15th].I was told this might be .....unhelpful next year. any help appreciated

Crabgrass will be dying off soon of its own accord. You need to treat for it early in the Spring before it appears.

Weed control should be done all throughout the year, not just at Spring. If all you are doing, is putting down pre-emergent in the Spring, it does nothing to control the weeds the rest of the year.

If you are trying to control a broad-leaf weed such as dandelions or creeping charlie now is the best time to treat. Since the plants are taking in nutrients and storing energy in the roots it will take the week killer there and kill the root of the weed.

They are perennial so winter will not kill them off. When they are actively growing treatment is effective. Once they are dormant it is not.
