water garden pump

Hi I built a small 6 x 8 water pond that I power with a small 330 gph pump. (I think). Its a self contained kit I bought at Walmart. Instead of using it as a fountain, I built a 10" waterfall to circulate and filter the water. My question is...will laying this pump on its side damage it? Right now it flows out of the top of the filter box, I thought about drilling a hole in the side of it and running my tubing thru there, as it will be much easier to hide under the rock in the pond.
Thanks for the help.
