Wasting fall lawn fertilizer in NW rain zone.

Am I wasting most of the lawn fertilizer if I apply in now or the next month or so just before the almost continuous rains of the Pacific Northwest? (particularly wet in my locale)

I have read about the good things of slow release nitrogen applied in fall, but if it sits in the soil, coated with slow release formula, is it not just going to be wasted and washed too deep in the next six months of steady rain?
