Look here--The Forestry Forum - Index

If it's a 'Yard tree' it is almost worthless---The cutters will not want to risk their equipment and safety on a tree that probably has metal in it.

The woodworking forums I visit often have links to craigslist ads from homeowners trying to sell their Walnut trees. Everyone generally gets a good laugh at some of the prices being ask. As the previous poster points out, there is too much danger of equipment damage to purchase any tree in an urban setting, unless it is a very special tree. A run of the mill walnut, your probably going to have to hire someone to take it down or give it away to someone who cuts firewood. Sadly, there is a blight called thousand canker disease that is spreading across the country, killing all the walnut trees where it spreads. Likely, in a few years all the walnuts may go the way of the chestnut trees.

Mike in Arkansas---I've never heard of that blight--Yikes---We are loosing all the ash trees up here--

Maybe I should get a load of walnut while the prices are so low---Thanks.

Ash too, wow. Pretty soon we will be down to building from bamboo. Not sure how either blight is spread but have read that it is not recommended to transport any wood more than a short distance from it's source unless it had been kiln dried.
