Walkway near big trees

the tree roots has caused a corner of my concrete walkway block to raise 1.75 inces high. A condition that can cause someone to tip and fall. Should I have a mason person lift the block first and then have a tree person to cut the roots enough to level the concrete block? Have the mason person come back to return the concrete block?

Cut the tree down and have the stump ground, move the walkway away from the tree. Just cutting the roots back is only a temp. fix. They will just grow back.

Cutting the roots could kill part or all of the tree.

I wondered the same thing. Cutting down the tree would be the absolute last thing to do.

How far are the roots away. A good rule of thumb is that if the root is underneath the canopy of the tree (where the branches extend) and it larger than an inch in diameter, it could be damaging to the health or structure of the tree. It if is right next to the tree and a large root, cutting it would NOT be a good idea. Google images of trees blowing over in storms because roots were ripped up.

Then again, if you're talking about a small root that is not close to the tree, you could be okay cutting it. Knowing the distance would be easier to help you.

My brief experience in this forum is to take joecaption with a bit of salt. Seems his first responce is to destroy things, and start the project over. Must be a demolition guy...

You can pour 10 yards of walkway concrete in a day. If you screw up or don't like the results, you can break the concrete back out in a day, and then pour again on the third day.

Try growing a tree to maturity in a day.

Nope not a demo guy. Just have worked on many larger propertys with super long tree lined driveways and walkways around the house and have seen the owners year after year trying to control all the lifted areas using differant methods.
One cut the roots back on a 100 plus year old Pin Oak tree 4' back from the walkway. The tree died.
He cut the roots back along a 1/4 mile long driveway, now all the trees are leaning, the drive is still lifting in some spots and dropping in others from rotting roots. He gave up and had gravel laid down the whole length of the drive and a couple times a year grades it out. Looks and rides much better now.
