Using the right bricks for firepit?

Hey everyone. We salvaged a lot of bricks from my great-grandparents' home that was recently torn down (built in 1895). Would we be able to use these bricks to build a firepit outside? We were concerned about the bricks' ability to take the high heat inside the pit, but then again, aren't bricks made by being baked in high heat?

Also, can/should we put lava rock down (like you would find in a garden center)?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

The building bricks will not take the heat extremes over time.

You could use the bricks you have to build the outside of the pit but the interior of the fire pit would be better served using "fire-brick" to line the fire box.:) You would also want to use (in the interior) the special mortar needed for the heat.:)

They may work for awhile IF you make the circle big enough to keep the fire a foot or more away, AND you make it fairly shallow in depth the the heat has a chance to get out & away from the brick.
