using natural slate for a patio

my husband and I are thinking about building a patio, and want to do something different, modern, and cheap. we found a place outside of town where there are large slate deposits and are thinking we would like to use that. however it seems as though the slate keeps breaking apart and is very brittle, and we're curious if there is a way to seal it or something to keep it from breaking...any thoughts would be great!!!
