trellis design?

I want a trellis but not sure about the price involved for a good one...I want to dimyself...I was thinking about a trumpet vine...I have the location picked out etc....the question I have is concerning the designe of the actual trellis....does a climbing vine typically need horizontal pieces (to grow on) or are verticle lines enough???
(hopfully to clarify a bit more if needed)
I envision a pice of wood that about 7 feet from the ground, horizontal with about 8 holes running its length...those holes would each hold a wire that would go down to another horizontal board with holes at about ground level...

Might work.

You could put up a 4x8 sheet of concrete re-wire also .

And when your vine has filled it, the ugly is gone.

trellis design?

I thought of another problem you might encounter.

Every time that I try to plant a vine, trumpet, hummingbird, morning glory, etc. The Ants in Central Wyoming eat the vine , These ants are voracious and think my little vines are a sweet treat.

Have you ever researched trumpet vines? Just some FYI: Although they are lovely, trumpet vines tunnel underground in order to spread and are virtually impossible to eradicate down the road if you ever want to change them out to something different. I love the look of them, but have never been brave enough to plant them myself. We used to have them when I was young and living in Texas. They were so much fun to lick the yummy nectar from inside the flowers! That being said, Trumpet Vines are also notorious for drawing bees which is awesome if you don't mind sharing your "space" with them.

I'd need to see a drawing to better understand your design. Are there specific goals that you are looking to achieve?
