Tree troubles

I have a strange little tree that came up volunter about 10 years ago and my Mom transplanted it into my yard. I had to move in with mom 2 yrs ago to help her after she had a stroke and so I rented my house. Renters moved out (never watered ANYTHING) and when I went to check on the trees and do some watering I noticed my tree has what looks like termite trails. The bark is coming off and there are little holes in the trunk under the loose bark. I hate to lose the tree. It is the only shade in that part of the yard. I think my mom said the tree was a box elder. How do I treat this? Can't afford an arborist since one would have to come from San Antonio!

We need a picture of the damage and the tree itself----some damage can be cured---other times the tree is a goner ---

Box elders are not a very valuable tree, Let's get it identified before you hire help .
