Too late to aerate/seed/and feed?

I live in western PA and would like to try to fix up my yard. It is mostly quite green which is good, but I do have a lot of broadleaf weeds a cross the acre plot. One area is probably near 50% or more weeds. I bought a tow behind aerator that I can put a couple hundred pounds weight on. I was hoping to aerate, weed and feed, and then reseed. Do I have enough time? Should I not use weed and feed? How would you go about?

It would be perfect for all but the weed killer part. You cannot apply that and then throw down grass seed.

Fall is generally a great time to overseed. In addition to aerating you will want to rake or dethatch so seed makes contact with the soil.

As mentioned, you do not have time to apply even a post emergent weed killer and seed. You should never use a pre-emergent with seed.

Just remember germination times. Perennial rye will germinate in 7-10 days but bluegrass and fescue will take 14-21 or more in ideal conditions.

Apply a fertilizer lower in nitrogen than usual to encourage root growth.

What if his question was, "since I don't have time for both, should I "weed" or "seed"?" I've got a similar issue on a smaller piece of land.

Most of the annual weeds will be done doing their thing soon so I would deal with them next year.

Fall, generally speaking and depending on where you are and when hit by hard frosts, is a great time to seed, hydroseed or overseed so I would not miss that opportunity.

Now if your yard is completely overtaken by weeds, you would have to deal with those just to have soil surface for the seed and you may not have time to then seed this year.

Got it. I live in eastern PA.

Not sure what constitutes "overtaken by weeks". I've got patches of grass AND patches of weeds. 50/50, maybe 60/40 weeds. I could take a picture when I get back home next week to post if that would help.

But, if we assume it "overtaken", what is the best/least expensive recovery method?

My point is if you have lots of large broadleaf weeds, there is going to be no easy way to get seed in contact with the ground where they are.
