How did this happen?
I'd think someone threw something on my lawn but doubt it...?

Any chance a dog peed on your lawn? The excess nitrogen can burn the lawn.

Also, if you've had hot weather and the roots of the grass are shallow in those particular spots (due to buried rocks, for example) they will go dormant before the rest of the lawn.

If you probe with a metal rod you might find some rocks buried under those spots, but I'm inclined to think dog pee.

My yard is fully hedged & there is a wire fence behind it & then I have a gate that should keep them out, cats might get in but I've not seen any cats that big around here..?

I'll try to find something to probe the ground with but this grass has never had this problem in over a year now...???

probable reasons for brown patches are commonly arises from watering or nutrition problems, fungi/grabs and more usage of fertilizers in some cases. Diagnose and cure those dry patches of grass you can have a healthy lawn

Nope, I always fuel up in the back yard right outside the shed in the dirt.
But.......sometime the mower starts to stall & I have found tilting it tend to fix the problem & maybe some fuel spill out?
Yet I have never noticed it nor looked for it.
