I'm starting the planning phase of my next project: lawn irrigation. Doing some research I've found a number of folks recommending Subsurface Drip Irrigation (SDI) over conventional sprinklers. Does SDI actually live up to the claims of better water usage while still being reliable? Also does anyone have any recommendations for information on SDI, especially DIY information? I've been able to find a few websites beyond the manufacturers, but it's mostly been pretty sparse.
Subsufrace drip irrigation mats had some success in Florida awhile back but I don't think enough to warrant installing such a system. I would put everything else you can on drip but stick with low wind drift and good conventional sprinkler design for turf. Water early when it is calm and the moisture does not evaporate immediately from heat. Water long and less frequently to encourage deep root growth.
