Which Stones to use for landscaping

I am planning to surround my home borders with decorative stones.
Not sure which stone to be used so that they look good and does not create a problem in long run.

Also I would be needing a lot of stones.
Could you please advise any one who can supply in bulk.
I know homedepot and lowes have them packed in a 0.5 Cubic feet bag.
But i will be needing a lot more than that.

Please advise if some one has already done this for their home,

btw I am in Central NJ

thanks

I strongly prefer mulch, it is much better for the plants and trees. However rocks will last longer without maintenance if that is your goal.

Your likely going to need to have a quarry come out with a truck load if your doing any kind of size able area.

Remember, spreading rocks is a "ton" of really hard work.

If your not dead set on rocks, check out all the different looks of mulch you can get now. Otherwise, make some calls to nearby quarries, or if none, larger landscaping places.
