snowthrower trouble

I have a 1983 sunbeam snowthrower i am trying to fix. i have replaced the coil and took off the points since the new coil will make its own spark. i have also replaced most gaskets and the needle valve on the carb. i have good spark and the compression seems good. when i try to start it fuel comes out the back of the carb and getting some out of the muffler. i also unhooked the engine from the clutch and had to bypass the safety switch.i have even tried some starter fluid and only got some smoke out of the muffler. does anyone have any other ideas for me? thanks

You replaced the needle valve, and you've got fuel coming out of the carb. It sounds to me like your needle valve is probably sticking or out of adjustment.
