I was thinking raised would be better since the soil out here in TX seems pretty rough and it also makes tending to the garden a little bit easier but I'm open to suggestions or alternatives.

DOn't have pics on me, but I used 4x4 for the corners and stacked two 2x6's on top of each other, screwed to the posts. So, the planting beds are 12" high. I then added another smaller bed with just one 2x6 below it, stepping down, but giving me another few feet of space.
Wall block is another commonly used option.
