Should we use Pea Gravel or Walnut Pebbles or What?

Hi! My wife and I are new homeowners in Michigan trying figure out all sorts of landscaping ideas, designs and advice for our backyard. We want to put some type of pebbles in one area of our backyard but don't know where are what type to get and how lay it down properly. Any suggestions? Attached are sone pics to view our backyard area. We just finished pulling up all the grass now what?

What are you thinking where the grass was? Replanted turfgrass or nice textured groundcovers?

I am not sure where you are proposing to put the pea gravel or whatever. If it is just to be decorative perhaps something larger like river washed stones would be a better choice. Pea gravel tends to get scattered around quite a bit.

Do you have pets that will kick the stone around? You are going to have to rake leaves from whatever stone you put down and again some heavier might be a better choice from this maintenance standpoint.

Please send some more input as to what you think you might like. It has a rather nice and cozy feel to it to start.

I think you will find it really helpful to scale out your yard and have it on graph paper or something as you choose materials, irrigation, plants, etc. Not to add to your project list.

Are you going to plant there?

If so, then much is a far better choice.

No, we're not going to do any planting in that area.

I would suggest you look at smaller stones. The smaller they are the closer they feel to flat surface when your walking on them. I did a patio area like that with mixed stones that were maybe up to an inch in size and it looked pretty but wasn't very good for walking on.

Pea gravel still moves around a fair amount when you walk on it, it doesn't pack down very well to a flat surface.

A crushed granite would look nice, but I'm not sure you will be able to find it at a reasonable cost.

Crushed granite is very nice to walk on and looks nice, it is just a little more expensive.

I have red granite in my yard, and I think it looks great. Find a place that has a good selection of landscaping stone, and go down there and browse.
