Rock stack

I would like to build a rock "tower" as a landscape accent. I have seen small river rock "towers" stacked with a steel rod holding them together in a stack. I want to use larger rocks from my yard. Other than drilling through them and using a rod, is there a better way or technique to adhere them together.

you can use mortar mix, construction adhesive, or even two part epoxy ( the last two options work better with flatter stone)

I make a lot of small cairn's - Mike did you figure a way to build a larger one? I am looking for a way to secure the stones in a large out door sculpture
