Get two more local bids and you'll know if it's a good price.
A ball park idea on any web site where the people could be from anyplace on the planet is going to be useless to you.

Salt Lake City, Utah

got two other bids for less work and higher price.

Everything the same except concrete patio instead of redwood deck or pergola was $14000.00. Meaning for $2000.00 more I turned the concrete into a redwood deck and redwood pergola at 942 sq. ft.

Have you asked for references from any of the bidders? If they are unwilling to give them...run away.

route68 07-10-2013 01:55 PM

references are solid for all bidders. This bid included 3 references with full disclosure of insurance. 33% at start, 33% at mid-point and 33% at the end.

To other bids required 50% at start and 50% at the end.

get something in writing, from whoever you chose, that once you make the final payment that all subs and materials will be paid in full.

besides the references i would want to see some of their completed jobs or jobs in progress.

You don't mention the scope of work for these bids. Are you asking them to repair an existing deck, tear one down, build a new one, replace floor, or whatever? I can't wrap my head around a competent builder constructing a redwood deck to code for $7 per square foot, I doubt he could buy the decking and rails for that price, let alone install it. So either you are getting an incredible deal, or there is something seriously wrong with the bid, or the scope is totally different. Sometimes things that are too good to believe, are too good to believe.
