I need a crash course on retaining walls. I really need to know as much as possible to build one successfully. Any website containing tutorials would be very helpful or any personal experience. Specifically I need the following.
1. If building a stone retaining wall how do I calculate how much material I will need?
2. I am assuming that retaining walls are considered landscaping and not really covered or governed by most building codes?
3. A primer on building retaining walls.

In most areas, any retaining wall over 4' high must be engineered and have a permit because of the load behind it.
If you are considering a segemental retaining wall (SRW), go to the sites for Allan Block, Anchor Wall Systems, Keystone and Versalok. All have good information, examples are available across the U.S. and in many other countries.
