Repairing outdoor fireplace

I have an old stone fireplace in my yard. It's basically large stones and mortar, and needs to have the mortar patched in places. Is there a special mortar I should use for outdoors, New England weather? And, do I literally just try to stuff the mortar in the gaps, or is there an actual technique?

Thanks!

You can use either mortar or caulk, as long as the stones do not get hot. The mortar would be formulated depending on the time of the year you are applying it, as outside temperature affects how it dries.
