Railroad ties vs tortoise

Are railroad ties safe for a wal in a turtle enclosure?

I would think the creosote or tar or whatever they use would be poisonous to turtles.

Who would ever want to contain any creature in a creosoted enclosure? Can you imagine what the genetically deformed creatures would be like?

The most common treatment for real railway ties is tar based creosote which is believed to be a carcinogen and has produced nasty genetic mutations and tumors in laboratory animals. I wouldn't use them around turtles.

The other issue is they tend to break down and leach chemicals into the soil as they do. And they are going to get very difficult to dispose of once the EPA rules on their toxicity and classifies them as hazardous wastes.

I would go with some other sort of retaining materials.
