Questions on an AWFUL Austin, TX yard...

So I bought this house back in June from an older woman who's only lawn care was her son coming by monthly to mow down the weeds... I spent the summer working on the inside, figuring I'd put some pre-emergent down on the yard this fall and start working on it more in the spring. Only I'm not sure what to do with it right now. I have splotches of St. Augustine, something that looks like Bermuda here and there, and crabgrass out the wazzoo... I've also got some broadleaf weeds taking over one part of the yard... I was considering just using a pre-emergent right now then seeding Bermuda in the spring... any suggestions or ideas? I've got a bag of Scotts Winterguard sitting in the garage right now, but I'm not sure if that's what I should use... Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

I had the same issue in my house that I bought. The previous owner thought his lawn was great bc it was green BUT it was 100% weeds. Pre-emergent will do nothing if you do it now. I sprayed some special spray that killed all the weeds and crabgrass. I did rye seed, although it was great on keeping the weeds away, its a pain to mow during the winter. In the spring I did bermuda seed and now have a wonderful lawn. Send me a PM and ill tell you what to use.

I am in the same boat as both of you. I'm over here in Rowlett TX though.
The grass was like 60% crabgrass.
Is it too late to do the preemergent? What can i put down?

Not sure if it's because I just woke up and can't figure it out or what, but I don't seem to have the ability to send private messages... :(

You cannot send PMs until you hit 20 posts, anti-spam measure.

Most crabgrasses are annuals so will be dying out soon.

Laying down a pre-emergent now may haunt you and the seed germination you desire come spring. If anything I would use something like RoundUp, a non-selective systemic on whatever you are sure you do not want. Then put your energy into prepping the soil for what you do want.

There is no reason to put Winterguard or any other fertilizer on weeds?

I do not know how much turf you have but decide how much you want to end up with. Scale your yard to paper and think about the overall landscape this Fall and Winter with the idea of doing everything else but the turf if you can during the coming months. Then take on the lawn.

This ended up being exactly my plan. I will do everything but the lawn for now. THe lawn will be my last step in the landscaping process.
