Questions about concrete stamping prep for patio

Hi, everyone.

I'm interested in refinishing an existing concrete patio. It's about 200 square feet, in four evenly sized sections. What I want to do is put down a thin concrete overlay that can be stamped into a more natural stone texture, and stained for color.

The existing surface actually has a very thin layer of epoxy paint that is worn through in a couple small areas.

My main question is, can I bond the overlay right on top of the epoxy finish, or is it necessary to use a grinder to take down that surface first? Second, what type of grinder should I rent for this project?
