QUESTION: Can lawn be fixed quickly?

Good morning!

My lawn suffers from large brown/dead grass spots and also various types of weeds mixed in with actual grass. I'm located in Central Virginia.

Now that it is Spring... would my lawn be easy to repair if I mow the lawn short, pick up clippings, and use Scott's turf builder or a similar type of seed?

What is the fastest, easiest, and least expensive fix?

Thanks guys, I'm a rookie homeowner with a baby on the way -- not a lot of time or resources available. Need a DIY fix!

When it comes to grass, there are no shortcuts....

NOW is the time to do most of the work.

Cut it short...scrape all the crap off....

Water early in the morning every other day...

Wait a few days for the grass to get some growth and then toss down some balanced fertilizer. Not too much...or you will do more damage. Better to go light and do it every 4-6 weeks.

Don't let the grass grow too high. You should never cut more than 1/3 of the blade.

Avoid weed killers. Frequent mowing and some hand pruning will work just as well.

Get that lawn going...next year your kid will be crawling around on it.

This may be obvious but when it comes to fertiliser, you need to get a spreader so it doesn't burn the lawn. True story - I worked with a guy from India who bought his first house and was just crazy to be a proud homeowner. he was a great guy so we spent a lot of time over lunch talking about how to do things. One day he started complaining about his lawn. He said he was getting large spots where the grass turned brown and then died. Eventually it came out that he had fertilized but he had just grabbed handfuls of the stuff and threw it around his lawn. H simply had never used fertilizer before back home in India and didn't know.
So excuse my intervention, but it is meant in the best possible way.

Cheers

Brad
