planting a new tree next to a cut-down

Cut down a dying crab apple tree last weekend.

Bought a Jap maple (bloodgood) as a replacement, but am concerned about it not thriving with the root systems of the old apple tree there. (Trying not to pay for stump/root removal).

1.) Any tips on how close/far the maple could be to the old stump (pictured)? The apple wasn't huge.

2.) If it's best to wait for the apple roots to die out more, can a Jap maple live in a plastic container over the winter?

If you cannot or will not remove the stump( small job) you can plant as close as you want. The crab apple trees roots will have no effect on your maple. The maple most likely will not live over winter in a plastic pot, unless you are in Cal or Fla., even then I would plant it.
