pergola drawbridge help

Hi, I will try and explain my issue as best as i can. I want to install a pergola outside. The area is about 5m X 4m and in the middle is a hot tub with decking surrounding it out to 3 high walls. I would like a wooden pergola to offer some shade, but the problem is I also want to enjoy full sunlight now and again when in the hot tub. SO i am thinking is it possible to make some kind of drawbridge mechanism so i can pull the pergola up 90 degrees to rest on the back wall, exposing the area to light??. if so does anyone have any good ideas which would look good?

Hope that made some kind of sense??

thanks dave

5m x 4m is really large. If that's the size of the pergola you're planning on making I don't think you're going to find a practical way to lift it -- it will be very heavy. Also, when lifted, it turns into a sail, so your vertical support would need to be really strong.

You might be able to make part of it slide though. That would be kind of nifty.

Pergola yes I had a similar thought ...

I had some brick left over from a patio I put in this summer so

I put in a 12'x12' ( 3.7m x3.7m) brick patio for a future hottub/pergola.

I put large sono tubes of concrete ( with screw studs) to the frost line (42" deep here or 1.05m )

in the corners just to hold the pergola ( I hope its enough it can get windy here).

Anyways enough rambling I've seen roll up canopy's for this application

online somewhere couldn't say where just google it and you'll probably

stumble across it like I did.

That's what I plan on doing .

EDIT DUH its late and it just hit me you want sun and I'm thinking full shade.

You could just space out your beams more or put them just around the perimeter still go with a roll up canopy .
