patio pavers or concrete patio in the great frozen northeast
What are the advantages or not of using one over the other ? We are concerned about the concrete cracking over time but are concerned the pavers will break the budget along with a retaining wall and firepit.
Concrete will always crack somewhere, but it cam be minimzed to where you normally can not see it.
Pavers are superior in a cold climate because it is a "flexible surface" - an engineering term that means it can move with the soil and return and the pavers will not crack, but a concrete slab is a "rigid surface" that can be expected to crack when the subgrade moves, so you have to control where it cracks.
Considering material cost, pavers are more costly, but for a DIY project, you can do it yourself and at your pace. Both materials require a base, even for a patio. You have to do the concrete pour all at once with some help. Pavers can be done intermittently until the surface is sanded and evened out to complete the job.
