Pomegranates require and love fairly severe pruning and yours is overdue. They will produce much more fruit if you have at them with pruning sheers and saws. Like most fruit trees. Wait now until it goes dormant. Or maybe until next spring depending on where you are. Read up on how to do it in the meantime.

Library is a good source to explore books on pruning. Ag extension may have specific publications for free or cheap. When I was in California the Sunset Western Garden Book was a must have book for gardeners and anybody else raising plants. I looked it up and posted in another thread it is still only $20 or so. Get to know your real local nursery. They will have great expertise not availed in box stores. Of course there is probably information to be found through Google and all too. Good luck.

You will like it. I gave mine to a friend in Cincinnati into gardening and he was able to abstract lots even for the different climate. My book was stuffed with notes and marked pages after 20 years living in the Bay Area and designing landscapes. You will use it a lot.
