Lumpy grass (was grow land back yard)

Hi

Have alot of grass in the garden, however the whole garden was used for growing potatoes, now it's lumpy so the mower to cut anything had to be lowest height (John Deere JS35) this pulls some earth in places at leaves 3 inches of grass in others.

I know I need to roll the lawn but should I be putting earth in places with seeds or level it out some how?

It's super hard to pull to mower it's so uneven (it has self drive so is fine but I have to even this out some how)

Some input would be good

Did you till and level this before you planted the grass?

Rolling may help but will compact the soil and filling in three inch differences with a roller may be asking a lot. You may have to level on some topsoil to fill things in.

Sounds like the person that sowed the grass seed didn't prepare correctly. You will have to fill it in. I would hate to see you roll and compact 3" down to the depth of the depressions. No good will come of that compaction.
