Question

Looking for help with sloping yard

I am new to this site & am hoping to get some good tips on how to help my backyard!

It is a small yard to begin with and it has a pretty steep slope towards the road. We are putting up a fence for safety & privacy, but I wonder about trying to level the yard first in order to make it a more useable space for us & the kids.. Ideally I think we should create a short retaining wall, backfill the area in question and then put the fence up. Any ideas on how best to do this? Or any suggestions on what might work better instead?

Thanks in advance for any input!

Done right it is fairly expensive and for sure it is brutal work. How high do you think it needs to be to raise the back end a still leave some slope?

I have built a few of them. The choice of what you use depends on the height and the purpose.

Hi Colby. I think in order to level the yard space it would need to be raised at least 2 feet.. I figure the wall should be about 3ft?

Rather than guessing, why don't you measure what it would take to level it ? Then think about how much slope you want to put in (and in which direction) to allow for drainage.

Then you will know the minimum wall height.

You also need to check the local regs for any set back that is required.

Can't say without a picture, but what about terracing it? If it's "that" steep, it's probably not very usable as is, so maybe you could get by with lower retaining walls, just a few more of them.

I can't tell you what the code is where you live. Here any wall more than 3' above grade must be submitted for approval and must have an engineers stamp on the plans. 'Nuff said.
