Lawnmower won't start...

Probably get this around here a lot. My mower wouldn't start at the beginning of summer. I sprayed starter fluid into the carb, and it would turn over then die. I gave up on it after five or so tries. The next day I was going to take it in, but decided to give it a go and it started up on the first try. Worked fine all summer, but then the sun killed our grass. Haven't had to mow for over a month. The autumn rain has brought our grass back, and it needs a trim before the winter months. Well, the same thing is happening. The gas is less than two months old, it has fresh oil in it. Starter fluid is making it turn, but then it dies.

Any ideas? I'm not remotely mechanically inclined, so layman's terms are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Try changing the spark plug.

Time to remove and rebuild the carburetor.
Try to only use nonethanol fuel or at least add an additive to counter act the effects of it.
Never leave gas in it when storing, dump it out and let it run until it stops.
This time of year only buy a gal. at a time.
Anything left over at the end of the season can be dumped into your vehicle.

I use Sta-Bil in the gas and that works for my lawn tractor, mower, and 4-cycle trimmer. I still clean the push mower's carb with Gumout every spring.

I wouldn't go pulling the carburetor just yet. Granted, it probably needs to be cleaned and rebuilt, but start simple. The fact that it runs for a little while when you spray starter fluid is pretty indicative that it's a fuel related problem (could be simply a clogged fuel filter), so check that first.

Change the air filter, fuel filter, and spark plug if you haven't done it in a while, and report back.
