About all you can do is water more heavily than usual which can be dangerous. The idea is to dillute and leach the fertilizer past the grass blades and roots. You may just have to wait it out. You don't want to over water for long and never late in the day so turf is damp after dark. Chances are the most damage is from nitrogen which is the first number of the NPK label and lawn food is always high in this.

You don't. Only time and rain can do that.

How do you know you over fertilized it?

I've done that, and paid a heavy price on thick mowing for weeks lol. It does slow down in a month or two though.

Depending on what kind of fertilizer you used, and how much you used, your lawn might actually grow much more aggressively in the next couple years. :)

When my sons & I had a lawn-mowing business, one of our customers was a lady whose son worked for TrueGreen, or some such lawn fertilizer company. He was forever coming to her house and spraying the last of his stuff on her lawn. The danged lawn was so thick that it NEVER dried out and was healthy until July or August. It was HORRIBLE to mow. Don't do that!

In my early lawn mowing days, I forgot that I put some Amonium Nitrate on a yard one cool week, and then did it again the next week with another fertilizer. Then it warmed up. It was SOOOOO huge the next week, I questioned whether or not I had even come by the previous week lol. Those were the days before mulching. I think I had a few trucks full of grass that week.
