lawn intsallation

How do I prep the soil? We're putting in a lawn at our new house. My hubby & I disagree on how to do it. We do agree to rototill, rake, grade & tamp, & put 2 inches of soil on top before hydroseeding. the question is: should we rototill compost into the soil and then put 2 more inches on top OR just rototill and put the new compost on top?

If your adding two inches of new good grade top soil the compost may be over kill. But if your going to do it, I would say compost, roto till lightly and then your top soil. Dont roto till too deep as some people do because you'll pull up buried dormant weed seed to the top of your new lawn.

Don't forget you'll need to put down hay also, or the wind will blow the seeds away unless the birds get to them first.

first off you should use straw not hay to many weed seeds in hay. second they are going to hydoseed so there is already a mulch in the mix so you dont need straw. Get a soil test and that will tell you how much and of what you need. Look into renting a tractor with a harley rake instead of a rototiller it will look better be much easier and alot faster.
