Landscaping near house

I have a few bare dirt spots near my house. Some were old flower garden area's that i'm looking to landscape over with something low... I also have some bushes/trees that expose the dirt beneath them. What is the best to put down? I'm worried about wood chips because my house recently had termites and i don't want to invite them back. Any suggestions?

1/2" to 1" river rock or other colored aggregate. Lay down fiber screen first.
