Knockout roses help

My knockout roses look like this after the winter months. I can see some green stems. Should I cut away all of the brown? Also, if you look at the very last picture for some reason that knockout rose died completely during the growing season and wouldn't bloom. I do remember taking away alot of mulch from around this area. Would have done anything? I need to buy some compacted brown soil to put around this area so water cannot get in our basement foundation.

yes prune the brown parts, and you can also prune the green ones too, it will sprout more new growth in the spring.

How low?

Im not a pro, but I trim the green back 6 inches or so and if its dead I cut the whole thing. I try and keep the little off shoots trimmed off.

Prune just above a new bud- which should be visible now. Knockout Roses will get about 4' tall x 4' wide, so you can prune them fairly hard. I usually take them down to about 18" from the crown. Remove any dead canes (the ones without buds- they are tan or brown).

Pruning scares people but helps plants and especially those like roses. Pruning is the best thing you can do for plants save for watering and feeding them.

Cut out all the brown and dead growth. Look for the buds on the new growth as mentioned.

Do work with sharp pruners and dip them in bleach between cuts if you want to be a purist.
