Kill old prennials

We tried replacing some landscaping and dug up some old perennials and thought we got all the bulbs. Now this spring looks like we missed some. We have some additional areas we want to replace the landscaping in another area that has some type of spring flower that blooms and then dies. What should I do different to get rid of all the perennials this time? Do people recommend a round up or some other chemical or what works the best?
