To kill or not to kill
Our lawn is infested with weeds and is lumpy. I hate it. I am thinking about starting from scratch but it sounds like a ton of work. I am also worried that I'm running out of time. We have two large trees that are getting removed because they were damaged by a storm. They are on the side yard and I thought I would maybe try just that area this year and see how it goes. I'll have to grind out the stumps and plant new seed anyways. Should I do it? I'm thinking I'd put some round up on it this weekend. Then I'll grind out the stumps in two weeks since I'll be at the beach next weekend. After the stumps are out I'll have to rototill it. I may have to do that the following weekend. How late can I put seed down? I'm going to look into pricing hydroseeding and if it isn't too much, I think I'll consider that.

Have you ever thought of starting a prairie garden ?
I'm at year 2 of one and am impressed , especially since they say about 4 yrs before its fully developed. It takes some work initially of pulling invasive weeds but no fertilizing no mowing ( once a season or burning ) no watering, basically no pampering like grass. It also attracts a variety of birds and butterfly's ect. I'm expanding mine to about a 1/4 of my lot this fall. |

I'll have to check the cameras as my computer only has a couple with the first year .( many are starting to go to seed right now ).
I put an annual rye mix in to hold the soil the first year as many plants only grow roots the first couple three yrs.( so only a rye grass pic ) Check back in a couple /three days if I have them I'll have my son post them . Here's where I got most of my seed. http://www.prairienursery.com/store/...page=page&id=9 Here's a native plants organization that we plan on joining the local chapter , it looks like theirs a chapter in PA. if your interested. http://www.for-wild.org/ A farmer friend got us interested as they had an acre of prairie planted several yrs ago, eventually they put 80 acres in tall prairie grass which is a site to see.( 6 + foot tall grass ) |
