Installing cement backer board on outside wall

I have a slightly uneven concrete wall that is painted and located above/behind a small pond outside. I would like to tile it and to save time and preparation is it possible to install concrete board directly onto the existing wall with concrete screws? Or does it have to have to be mounted on wooden frame? I live in the tropics.
