This stuff keeps coming up in my yard. Any idea what it is and how to get rid of it?

It looks to be a crabgrass but may be an annual "quackgrass" seed being blown in or dropped by birds if it is sparse. If it is in localized areas you can use a post-emergent killer.

The more common approach is to lay down a pre-emergent preventer soon to keep seeds from germinating. Their are chemical and organic forms of such herbicides. You will not be able to overseed once you put a pre-emergent down though.

Roundup is another option if it is isolated from other turfgrass like in the picture. Roundup is a systemic, non-selective herbicide though and will kill anything it comes in contact with.

One of the best strategies for lawn weed control is a regular turf feeding schedule. It is a strength in numbers game and healthy turf will squeeze out many weeds or at least give the herbicids a fighting chance. You can get weed-n-feed products.

Thanks! I have been at this house 4 years and have a lawn service. Admittedly, the lawn needed attention pretty bad when I first got here. Over all the lawn is looking pretty good. This stuff is very sparse. But it makes it look like the lawn needs mowing. My wife asked me the other day if I hadn't just mowed two days before? I said yes but this stuff looks bad.

I agree that it looks like Quackgrass. Crabgrass tends to lay down and spread out, smothering any turfgrass that gets in its way.

I just found what I believe to be Quackgrass in a couple areas of my lawn this past weekend. Fortunately, it wasn't deep-rooted, so it came out rather easily.

Quincept..........All i got to say. Kills all weed style weedy grass (crabgrass, quackgrass, etc...) but will not harm your standard grass.

Pull it. If it's quack grass there's not much you can do to get rid of it unless you pull it or kill it by putting something like round-up on it. Had a friend that has done this every year for 4 years. Pull and reseed, pull and reseed. Labor intensive but if you want a fairway for a lawn, it's the only way to go.
