How to take care koi pond?

Just bought my first house which has a koi pond. The previous owners moved out about a year ago (and took the fish away) so I can safely assume the koi pond has not been maintained for a year. I have no idea how to maintain this thing. First I need to change the water, how do I do it? =)

First of all--changing the water might not be needed or even wise---if you are on city water ,the chlorine might cause problems (chloromine) --

What sort of filtering system does the pond have?
Is the pump still working?

A picture of the pond and any systems will help----We have a member with a fine pond--perhaps he will see this and help----I also have pond experience---Mike----

Great---Poke around the pond an see what you can find---most often the pond water is pumped into a filtering system or water feature that acts as a filter and adds air to the water.

Do you see a filter system on the outside of the pond? How
big is the pond?
Yes, you need to empty the pond and vacuum out all the
gunk and fill it immediately with fresh water.
I am assuming it's a liner pond and not concrete?

Do not leave the pond empty after draining it and cleaning it.
Make sure you have the time to refill it after you clean it.

Do you have any idea how much water it holds? It's a good idea to
know how many gallons it holds in case you ever have to treat the
pond for parasites.

You first have to determine how to maintain your filter system,
if you have one. You may just have pumps that are in the pond?

Try and give us more info...It's a really a fun hobby. Once you get
through the initial setup of getting the pond in working order, and the
chlorine dissipates, and the pond cycles itself, you then can add fish.
